The Role
This is an exceptional opportunity for an experienced Costs Lawyer or Costs Draftsman seeking a more flexible and progressive way of working. Moving away from the traditional 9–5 structure, the firm empowers its team to manage their own time and workload, offering complete autonomy over working hours and location.
You will be supported by robust systems, streamlined processes, and a highly experienced leadership team. The role provides exposure to high-value, complex costs matters across a broad range of litigation.
Experience Required
- 3–5 years’ experience in legal costs
- Strong understanding of the Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) and relevant case law
- Proficient in costs drafting software and general IT systems
- Ideally a qualified ACL Member (or working towards accreditation)
- Experience handling multi-track, high-value, and complex costs matters
Key Responsibilities
Caseload Management
- Independently manage a varied and active caseload comprising personal injury, clinical negligence, commercial litigation, and other civil matters.
- Ensure all files progress efficiently, meeting deadlines and client expectations.
- Provide regular updates and reports to the Director and senior management team.
Costs Drafting
- Prepare detailed Bills of Costs for multi-track and high-value claims.
- Draft Costs Budgets (Precedent H) and Budget Discussion Reports (Precedent R).
- Produce Costs Schedules for summary assessment hearings.
- Draft Costs Estimates and update them throughout the litigation process.
- Prepare Points of Reply and Points of Dispute where required.
Negotiation & Advocacy
- Negotiate the settlement of costs with opponents, achieving commercially favourable outcomes.
- Engage in telephone negotiations, written negotiations, and ADR where appropriate.
- Prepare files for Detailed Assessment Hearings, with opportunities for advocacy depending on experience.
Client Care & Communication
- Maintain strong working relationships with clients, providing clear, concise, and commercially focused advice.
- Respond promptly to client queries and provide strategic guidance on costs issues.
- Ensure all work is completed in line with compliance, regulatory, and quality standards.
Technical & Professional Development
- Keep up to date with developments in costs law, CPR updates, and case law.
- Contribute to internal knowledge sharing and best practice discussions.
- Participate in training sessions and professional development opportunities
